HOLMEGAARD DECANTERS

I have hardly any glass by the Danish glass maker Holmegaard. Even one of the Kluk Kluk decanters I have here is not mine, and two of the other decanters were gifted to me. One of the key reasons is that I like quality glass, and although Holmegaard does have avant garde designs and their own style a lot of the output is not of that high a quality. For example, when you look at stopper fitting, it seems not to be a priority. If you are going to keep spirits in a decanter for any length of time a good fit is essential to stop evaporation. If the stopper doesn't fit well then the decanter has failed in a part of its function in my eyes.

This may seem harsh for a venerated glass house, but is it only my personal view and explains why I have so little of it on my website. I do hope to rectify this, if I see something I particularly want.

Description, References and Size

A Holmegaard ships decanter with four neck rings and lozenge stopper with gilt edging. Holmgaard model number 6190, made circa. 1950-56.

At first glance this looks like a Georgian decanter but there are things not right about it, in particular the sharp edge to the base. Regardless of this, it is a good decanter and I think it quite scarce.

A Holmegaard bulbous grey glass "York" decanter two asymentric dimples and single pouring lip. It has a solid stopper with dimples. Designed by Per Lutken, Holmgaard model number 14560, made circa. 1953-71.

Per Lutken produced some of what I consider to be classic designs, and this is one of them. They are so classic that they are not that uncommon, and from my point of view getting them is a matter of finding them at a bargain price, because I am bit tight.

A Holmegaard bulbous grey glass "Danica" decanter with two dimples pressing it into a near donut shape, two pouring lips, and a solid ball stopper. Designed by Per Lutken, circa. 1950s.

This is another of Per Lutkens classic designs that is fairly common. If you want one of these you just need to Google and figure out which one for sale has the most agreeable price. Remember to consider postage in the equation.

Note as per my description, is not a hole through the middle of the decanter. Where the middle hole appears to be, the decanter is less than an inch wide.

A Holmegaard Kluk Kluk decanter with a solid ball stopper. Designed by Jacob E Bang, Holmgaard model number 282. Made circa. 1960s-80.

Holmgaard churned out millions of Kluk Kluk decanters this is the one not to buy. That is because this is the standard, it is not coloured, the body is standard, the stopper is standard, etc. If you wanted to collect Kluk Kluks there are loads of variations, but this is not one of them. I have it because it was so cheap, and I was walking by.

A Holmegaard Kluk Kluk decanter with three layers of liquid resevoir and solid ball stopper. Designed by Jacob E Bang, Holmgaard. Made circa. 1960s-80.

Although Holmgaard seemed to have churned out millions of Kluk Kluk decanters this is the only triple resevoir one I have seen. I am certain it is Holmgaard because it originally had a label on it.

I would like to thank my brother-in-law David for letting include this decanter.

This is a rectangular mould blown decanter, with a painted dockside scene with a white trawler. The stopper cork with a flat metal top with a ring on it. Late 20th Century.

Holmegaard were quite prolific in making this kind of decanter with the glass the same for every one but with deisgns by various artists. These are not high quality things, these are about having something to have on your shelf or giving as presents etc..

This is a rectangular mould blown decanter, with a painted Christmas scene. The stopper cork with a flat metal top with a ring on it. It has circular a sticky plastic label that says Holmegaard. Late 20th Century.

In line with what I said above Holmegaard produces this decanter with a different Christmas scene every year. Usually you can punt around on the Internet and find out which year they were made, unfortunately I can't find this one.
