IRISH GLASS

I have created a section on Irish Glass as not only do I have some Irish Decanters, but I also have several other items of Irish glass. All of my Irish glass is from the late 18th and early 19th century.

In this section I have been careful to pick out the pieces I am pretty certain are Irish, either because I have found them in books on Irish glass or because they are Irish types and I have bought them in Ireland.

During the classic period (1783 to 1850) of Irish glass making, glass was made in Ireland usually by English craftsmen using English materials. The reason English craftsmen and materials were going to Ireland is because Ireland had a tax exemption on glass production. The story of Irish glass is an epic and I am not going to try and recreate it here. If you really want to know about it I recommend the books of Phelps Warren and Dudley Westropp.
